Meet Your Instructor

Phil Zito, CEO Smart Buildings Academy

I'm Phil Zito. I created Smart Buildings Academy, formerly Building Automation Monthly, in 2012 to share knowledge with fellow BAS professionals. I saw a gap in training was being done across the industry. I held various BAS roles at Johnson Controls including:

► Technical Integration Program Manager
► Technology Ecosystem Manager
► Project Development Engineer- Analytics
► Operations Manager
► Service Technician

Look, I know what it feels like to come home, completely zapped after spending all day working on a 140-degree roof. You feel drained, you know you need to do something to get ahead, but you just can’t summon the energy. I understand how challenging it can be to become the highly efficient and effective BAS professionals you know you can be while juggling your responsibilities. That's why I created SBA to make it as easy as possible for you. Our courses run at YOUR pace, but we also offer biweekly office hours in case you need some help with the material so you can stay on track through completion. You've got this! And we're here to help you succeed.

What Our Students Are Saying

It is great to have Phil pull me out of the deep end of the pool for a few minutes to give me the background and big-picture perspective of how all the pieces of the project fit together. Phil provided example tools and instructions on how to use them, to successfully lead a project.
K. Rogers
I thought that as someone who is familiar with in the field technical implementation of controls systems, this was a great Segway into understanding project management.
James W.
This course was the perfect road map to help my transition from Technician to project management. The course is always patient, and always available on your time. this course covers many topics large, small and in between, which you may not get to cover with just experience alone. There is also great benefit as the course is like a neutral/anonomus mentor that will not judge or have an ulterier motive. The exercises in the course are excellent conversation starters you can carry over to a mentor. I greatly Appreciate the Structure of the processes spelled out. the spread sheets are a nice bonus. I can only say that as a technician, the years of experience, can be placed with a few months of training.

What Students Are Saying

Well simply put I've been in the BAS Field for 10 years and wanted to move into higher role which the next open opportunity was an BAS Estimator. Took this course and landed an interview and was given the position as what I learned in this course had given me the skills to start working in the position right away.

Well put together. I definitely learned somethings and it opened my eyes to other things I still need to learn.
