At Smart Buildings Academy (SBA), we understand the critical role building automation systems (BAS) play in healthcare environments. From maintaining precise environmental conditions to ensuring life-safety compliance, hospitals and healthcare facilities depend on reliable, well-managed BAS.
That’s why our training is designed to meet the unique demands of the healthcare industry, equipping your team with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize BAS in high-stakes environments.
Designed for Healthcare Environments
Our courses focus on the challenges faced by hospital facility teams, such as maintaining tight temperature and humidity tolerances, managing critical zones like ORs and isolation rooms, and integrating with life-safety systems.
Compliance-Driven Curriculum
Healthcare buildings are subject to strict standards like ASHRAE 170, NFPA, Joint Commission (JCAHO), and CDC guidelines. Our training emphasizes BAS strategies to meet these regulatory requirements.
Minimize Downtime & Maximize Patient Safety
We help healthcare maintenance and facility teams improve their response time and accuracy, reducing risk to patients and staff from system failures or performance drops.
Flexible, On-Demand Learning
Access world-class BAS training anytime, anywhere. Our online platform is perfect for 24/7 healthcare operations and rotating facility staff schedules.
Role-Specific Learning Paths
Whether you're a building engineer, HVAC tech, facility manager, or maintenance technician, we offer customized learning paths aligned to your role and responsibilities in a healthcare setting.
Trusted by Leading Healthcare Organizations
Our students work in major hospital systems and medical campuses across North America. SBA is the #1 BAS training provider, helping healthcare teams stay compliant, efficient, and ready for anything.
Smart Buildings Academy delivers practical BAS training that saves time and money, focused only on the skills you and your team actually need.

He is the author of Building Automation Systems A to Z and holds Master’s degrees in Information Systems and Information Assurance. A former CEM, CCDA, CISSP, and LEED AP, he brings a deep technical background and industry insight to the rapidly evolving world of smart building technology.
Michael brings over 23 years of experience in the HVAC and controls industry, with a strong foundation in both engineering and education. He holds an A.S. in Manufacturing Technology and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering Technology, along with a LEED Accredited Professional certification. A state-certified science teacher, he combines technical expertise with a passion for knowledge-sharing in the built environment.
Ethan has 11 years of hands-on field experience working with commercial HVAC systems, building automation (BAS) controls, and security systems. He is certified on Schneider Electric’s Security Expert software and brings a strong technical background to every project. A U.S. Army veteran, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal in 2012 for distinguished service.
We built Smart Buildings Academy to bridge the gap between technical knowledge and real-world field performance, especially in mission-critical settings like hospitals and medical centers. Our curriculum is created by industry professionals with hands-on experience in building automation systems, including those used in healthcare environments with complex HVAC, critical alarms, and compliance needs.
Our training emphasizes job-ready skills through structured lessons, assessments, and real-world assignments. Healthcare clients such as the GSA, the Federal Reserve, and large OEMs trust us because the results are measurable. Facilities report faster response times, fewer environmental control failures, and improved service quality.
Most organizations see a two to four times return on investment within months by reducing equipment downtime, avoiding compliance issues, and enabling faster troubleshooting.
That’s exactly why our training is designed to be flexible. It is 100 percent online, self-paced, and accessible on any device. Your technicians can train during slow periods, between calls, or after shifts without needing to leave the site or interrupt care delivery.
We also offer microlearning modules. These are short, targeted lessons that allow your team to gain specific skills quickly without disrupting their responsibilities. Whether it's air handling diagnostics or alarm prioritization, your team can learn without pulling resources from patient support.
Experience is essential, but even seasoned techs benefit from sharpening their skills and adapting to new technologies. Healthcare systems often include a mix of legacy infrastructure and cutting-edge systems, which can present unique challenges.
Our training helps experienced staff:
Many long-time professionals tell us they discovered new techniques that saved them significant time and helped them meet regulatory demands more effectively. This training is not about replacing experience. It is about maximizing its impact.
Yes. Over 15,000 professionals have completed our training, including facility teams from major institutions, government agencies, and OEMs such as Trane and Honeywell. Our vendor-neutral programs are recognized for producing confident, capable technicians who can work across multiple platforms.
Although we do not provide OEM certifications, our training is known across the industry. You will receive detailed progress reporting to demonstrate your team’s learning, and your techs will be more versatile, adaptable, and prepared to support a wider range of healthcare building systems.
Our platform is designed to drive completion and support your team every step of the way. You will have full visibility through training dashboards, completion tracking, and optional coaching to keep your team engaged.
Each lesson delivers practical knowledge that technicians can use immediately in the field. If someone struggles, they can revisit the material as often as needed. Every technician receives the time and support necessary to succeed.
OEM training is important for understanding specific equipment. Our training builds on that foundation by teaching system-wide thinking, integration strategies, and diagnostic processes that apply to any BAS platform.
We help your technicians think independently, solve problems confidently, and navigate mixed-system environments with ease. This is especially important in healthcare settings where timely resolutions and cross-platform understanding are vital.
Many of our healthcare clients use our training in combination with their OEM programs and see increased effectiveness across the board.
